As a community, we have and will continue to look after one another amidst illusions of division. Thank you for celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month with us. “More connects us than separates us… the wise build bridges, while the foolish build barriers.” – King T’Challa, Wakanda (Black Panther movie)
Ying Ge Wang, a Massachusetts Promise Fellow and current U&I Mentoring Coordinator, spoke at the MPF Fundraiser. One of our mentor and mentee matches joined her onstage to share their experience. “I remember the day when I got accepted into Clark University. I told myself, ‘One day, when language is no longer a barrier, I’m going to come back to this community with all the things I’ve learned and use my knowledge and experience to empower as many people as possible.’ And now I have the most distinct honor to serve QARI and the young people who have been challenged by the same barriers that I faced. To be served by a community and then to be serving that very same community is an indescribable feeling.” – Ying Ge Watch her speech here.
On Saturday, April 21, mentees from our U&I Mentoring Program made ‘Welcome Home’ signs for new affordable housing residents in Chinatown. Much thanks to Asian Community Development Corporation and Comcast for an awesome Comcast Cares Day.
QARI provided interpretation and liason support for residents at 80 Clay and O’Brien Towers for their tenant association meetings. We have also provided information and referral services to meet the needs of senior citizens. On April 9th, QARI collaborated with Asian American Service Association (AASA) andSouth Shore Health Systems to bring a group of senior citizens for free oral/head/neck cancer screening at South Shore Health System’s Cancer Center. We continue this collaboration to provide free skin cancer screening on Thursday, May 17th.
QARI participated in South Shore YMCA’s Healthy Kid’s Day on Saturday, 4/21 to support the Y’s national initiative to improve families’ health and well-being, and to motivate and teach families how to develop a healthy routine at home.
QARI, South Shore Mental Health, and Quincy Public Schools are collaborating to provide weekly workshops for youth on mindfulness and wellness at North Quincy High School, starting this month. We are committed to fighting the stigma on mental health, a fundamental barrier to treatment.
